Relaxing this Winter at the Gateway Lodge

Winter in Cook Forest
It is definitely one of those days that lends itself to curling up by a fire and reading a good book. As I look out from our picture windows, I am in awe of the snow-laced trees in the forest surrounding us. They are absolutely stunning! Admiring the view from inside the Lodge sometimes draws me outside to take on the forest by foot. One of my favorite things to do in the winter is to rent a pair of cross-country skis and head out on the trails. As dusk approaches you can hear some wonderful forest sounds.

Dale Luthringer, a naturalist from Cook Forest State Park, does an excellent job of inviting people to experience the forest first hand. He offers snow-shoe hikes at night and birdwatching walks through the forest in the morning. You can find out more information about upcoming programs by calling the State Park Office: (814) 744-8407.  I highly recommend taking a snowshoe hike–it's so much fun!

Staying indoors with feet propped up on one of our sink-in leather sofas is active as some get around the Lodge. Believe me, when you are looking to relax, a good book, fire and a hot buttered rum are all you need. Last weekend a couple came up and found a great spot by the fire, and in comfy sweats read devotionals together in the afternoon. They looked so content and relaxed...and into each other.

I love to see that change in guests during their stay. At first they may come in concerned about babysitters, minds still racing from work, or in disbelief that they are actually getting away. But it doesn't take them long to find rest here. Whether it's found after a day of activity in the forest or a day of sinking deep into a comfy couch, it happens. They find time for themselves and each other.

At Gateway Lodge, we have the opportunity to bring rest and some peace into each guest's visit. It's a gift we love giving.

Below is a photo I took of a recent snowfall outside of the Lodge. I was driving in at night after the Lodge had closed, and this little light welcomed me home. (courtesy of my iPhone)
